“Take a Sip 2013” is a success!

untitled-18Whether it was the beautiful live music, the gorgeous venue, or the noteworthy speakers, something made sure the night was a big hit!

On May 11, 2013, FTOÉ held its second annual Take a Sip for Fair Trade event at the Cube Gallery on Wellington. The reception has been tremendously positive, with praise streaming in for our keynote speakers, the specialty Fair Trade cocktails and our amazingly hard-working volunteers. All in all, FTOÉ has been amazed and humbled by the support that we received for the event and the feedback that has followed it!

One of the major draws for the evening was our lineup of keynote speakers. We were absolutely delighted to have Henk van der Molen in attendance, representing local co-operative, La Siembra, who makes the incredible Camino line of chocolates and baking products. He took our guests through the story behind some of the most popular items in the Camino collection, ensuring that in this consumer movement, we were connected with the producers who are at the heart of Fair Trade.

FTOÉ was ecstatic to welcome Paul Dewar, MP for Ottawa Centre, as our final speaker of the evening. Diving into the connection between consumerism and conflict in the developing world, Mr. Dewar alluded to the lesser-acknowledged fact that our choices as individuals can often have indirect consequences that we don’t anticipate. His talk was very well received indeed, and left our guests with lots of food for thought.

With speakers of this caliber, it’s no wonder that people are still talking about the event! We were honoured to welcome so many passionate, knowledgeable people into the Cube gallery to share ideas and to work together towards social change. Many thanks to the people who made it possible, from our hard-working volunteers, to the wonderful people who run the Cube gallery, and everyone who supported us at the event and beyond.

We look forward to welcoming you to next year’s event, which we hope will only be bigger and better!
